Special Auction Item

Flo Oy Wong, featured speaker at this year's luncheon, has generously donated artwork from her made in usa: Angel Island Shhh series for our silent auction. The mixed-media artwork can be viewed in person at Art in Action's office and at the event.

This piece is tells the story of Wong Sik Yee, a 77 year old living in Oakland, California.  He had entered the U. S. as a 16 year old.  Beginning in 1937, his stay at Angel Island lasted two years.  Each time he was questioned, he claimed to be his grandfather’s son.  Some time after his release, he went to live with his father in San Francisco. This piece was made in 1998 to honor Wong Sik Yee.

Visit Flo Oy Wong's website to learn more about the artist and her work.

made in usa: Angel Island Shhh by Flo Oy Wong
made in usa: Angel Island Shhh, a series composed of twenty five rice sack flags, is an exploration of the identity secrets of Chinese immigrants detained and interrogated in the United States from 1908 to 1951. The flags tell the stories of immigrants who entered this country under false identities as a result of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Law, which forbade the entry of Chinese laborers, their wives, and families. The law was repealed in 1943.

These works were made in collaboration with the Kearny Street Workshop of San Francisco with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
